Spotted vegetable weevil

Constraint - Spotted vegetable weevil

Description

  • Larvae are white, legless, with orange brown heads and grow up to 8 mm long

  • Adults are mottled grey-black weevils, grow up to 7 mm long with the definite weevil snout

Symptoms

  • Adults chew the cotyledons, leaves and stems of emerging crops

  • Small plants may be eaten to ground level

Damage

  • Yield reduction can occur if populations are high and remain uncontrolled

Control

Spraying with a synthetic pyrethroid can give control, when applied to green plant material. Control can be difficult when there is no or little green material.
