Diseases in Canola
Broad disease constraint resources are outlined in the Agronomists Toolkit. Specific disease categories are listed below:
Cauliflower Mosiac Virus
Constraint - Cauliflower Mosaic Virus
Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) is one of three viruses that infect Australian canola. Beet western yellows virus (BWYV) and Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) are the others.
Symptoms
-
Older leaves have pale ring-spots or are mildly mottled with pale veins
-
Plants infected before stem elongation can be stunted, with few flowers or seeds
-
Symptoms appear in autumn, with early sown crops showing highest infection
Damage
-
Plants affected as seedlings show greatest yield loss
-
Percentage of actual yield loss is often very hard to determine
Management
Control of brassicaceous weeds and volunteer canola (especially over summer), retaining stubble at sowing, manipulating sowing dates, and sowing at high seeding rates can all be effective managment strategies for reducing the impact of Cauliflower mosaic virus.
