Abiotic constraints in Canola
Broad constraint resources are outlined in the Agronomists Toolkit. Specific constraint categories are listed below:
Tipping
Constraint - Tipping
Symptoms
- Flower and pod abortion or incompletely filled pods on sections of the flowering spike
- Frost, heat, aphids, nutrient deficiencies, and mositure stress can all cause tipping
Damage
- Canola plants are able to compensate for damage if sufficient moisture becomes available before the flowering and podding stages are finished.
Management
Little can be done if heat or frost causes tipping. However nutirent defeciencies can be treated by application of the appropriate fertiliser, and aphids can be sprayed if it is economic to do so. Irrigation may also correct tipping if such an option is available.
